Here's a useful trick you can work with your Num Lock key:
Most of us never use the Num Lock key. If you don't know where it is you'll find it immediately above the Numeric Keypad on your PC, or at the extreme top right hand corner of the keyboard on your Laptop.
It has a secondary function that is really useful.
If you hold it down for five seconds it opens the "Accessibility Options" dialogue box which allows you to set your computer to beep whenever you accidentally hit the Caps Lock key, Scroll Lock key, or Num Lock key. Try it! It can save a lot of frustration.
Continuing on from the above, I had an embarrassing experience when I bought my first laptop about eighteen months ago. After a week or two I took it back to the retailer—Computer Discounts at Penrith—and complained that the keyboard was faulty. "The left side of the keyboard is OK," I said, "but when I type on the right side some of the letters come out as numbers." Hai, who manages the shop, didn't even smirk. He passed it to his off-sider and said, "Have a look at this, Vincent." Yes, well you've guessed what happened. Vincent powered it up and tapped the Num Lock key and suddenly my computer was fully functional again. I didn't realise that a laptop had a numeric key pad, and hadn't twigged that it operated as an alternate function on the "890 UIO KL; and M" keys.
