There's an Indian proverb that says, "Chess is like an ocean where a gnat may drink or an elephant may bathe." The same can be said for the Internet. Whether you want to study for a Ph.D, chat to friends, insure your house, post a video of the grandkids on YouTube, place a bet on the Super Bowl, or just while away the time, there's something out there for you.
As recently as 1993 there were only fifty websites in existence; by the end of 2008 that figure had grown to 182 million. It's a vast ocean in which, like the gnat and the elephant, we can find our own level of interest and activity.
Many years ago, long before those fifty embryonic websites, an IBM executive quipped that, "If they'd made the same advances in aviation that we've made in computers, it would now be possible to fly around the world in half an hour, for $20, in an aeroplane six inches long!"
