Did you realise that if you have an Internet connection you need never pay for another newspaper? It's all available on line. Of course, you'll get lots of unwanted advertising on the page but if you use a program like Ad-blocker you won't even know they're there. There's a tutorial about how to install Ad-Blocker on Internet Explorer at THIS SITE, but if you've moved into the 21st Century and are using Firefox in preference to Internet Explorer, you can download a copy of it HERE.
I have all the major Australian newspapers in my bookmarks, as well as several overseas publications. That way I get to read the news from whichever viewpoint seems appropriate. It certainly helps to avoid being too parochial.
There can also be personal reasons for seeking out overseas newspapers—especially in times of disaster when family or friends might be in the area. On a lighter note, when my son, Geoff, made an attempt on the English Channel last year he was featured in the London Daily Telegraph who chose just then to do a feature on the phenomenon. You can read about Geoff, his training partner Steve, and two other swimmers HERE.
OK, so there's a case for reading the paper on line but the title of this page was "Heralding New Technology" and that's really useful for you.
The Sydney Morning Herald's on-line edition features a TECHNOLOGY section every day from Monday to Friday. It's still there on the weekends, of course, but nothing new is added on those days. Much of what's there may be a little too esoteric for some of us, but it's full of information about what's going on with computers and the Net. Much of the free software I now use was recommended by the SMH. Until I read their article I belonged to the what-you-pay-for-is-what-you-get philosophy and I was pleased to learn that I was wrong.
So from a purely financial point of view it can be worth your time to glance through it. You don't have to read the things that don't interest you.
Apart from the freebies (which are mentioned only occasionally) there's all the latest information on technology and innovations, there's up-to-date information on new virus threats, there's information about e-mail scams, and a host of things that are of value to the average computer user.
Make it a regular port-of-call. You'll find it interesting.
