From our point of view, a Web Browser may be defined as a software application used for retrieving information from the Web. It can do some other things, too, like file transfers—using FTP:// instead of that HTTP:// we're so used to seeing on Web addresses—but most of us just use it to find stuff.
Internet Explorer is the most commonly used web browser—not because it's the best, but because your new computer comes equipped with Microsoft software, and Explorer is included in the package. Number two on the world list is Mozilla's Firefox which has earned its position because it's just so good. Google's much-vaunted Chrome has recently appeared on the scene and will undoubtedly take its place among the good browsers which include Opera and Safari.
Upgrading to the latest version of your browser is usually a good idea for two reasons—security and performance.
Newer browsers incorporate new security features designed to keep you safe when you’re browsing online. These feature include anti-phishing protection to identify suspicious websites. Getting the latest browser is essential for your online security.
The other reason to upgrade your browser is to allow web pages to display as they were intended by their designers. The first thing I learnt about designing web pages was that not all browsers are created equal. Because of that I've tried to keep the U3A website at a rather generic level so that the pages will display the way I want them to on most browsers. The latest browsers are better at interpreting HTML as it was intended to be viewed.
