Discussion focused on the Ageing 2030 themes of Prevention and Early Intervention, including ageing well and maintaining independence; Livable Homes and Communities, and Economic and Social Engagement. U3A Christmas Party
Our U3A Christmas Party was held on Saturday 15th December at the Penrith School of Arts. Only about 30 members attended so there was more food than we could eat and some of us tried very hard to eat it all - without success. It was a really festive party with Marie Stewart leading the singing of Christmas Carols. We now have the nucleus of an U3A Choir. If you wish to join (you do not have to be a good singer – just enjoy singing), contact Marie Stewart Tel: 9832 7190 or mar-stew@bigpond.com.au .

Ancient Egypt – the 18th Dynasty
David Evans’ article (originally printed in the email newsletter) is also shown on our website along with photographs of a beautiful old Mummy and some attractive young Grand Mummies and Granddaddies too. You can view it HERE.

Introduction to Lapidary Course
The Blaxland Gem and Mineral Club Inc (that is situated in The Valley Road, Valley Heights) has offered to run an Introduction to Lapidary course for U3A members in Term 1 of 2008. Participants will be provided with an overview of minerals and rocks, their characteristics, how they are formed and where they can be found in Australia.
Demonstrations will show how to cut, shape, polish and facet stones and all participants will be given a piece of stone and shown how to make a cabochon; a stage at which it could be used in a piece of jewellery.
Because the club’s workshop consists of various pieces of cutting, grinding and polishing machinery, a $18 fee will be charged to cover the club’s membership and insurance.
If you are interested in taking this course please advise Alan Lees u3acurriculum@yahoo.com.au or the Office.

Committee News

Secretary
Phill Hill resigned as Secretary because he is relocating further west - near Lithgow. He will also be unable to give his course on “A New Perspective for Family Therapy” at Penrith. However, he will still run the course on “Developing a Culture of Dialogue” at Our Lady of the Nativity Parish Meeting Room at Lawson. He also hopes to be involved in other U3A courses out West.
Brenda Emerson volunteered to act as Secretary and was accepted by the Committee.

U3A Conference 2010
The following members agreed to form a sub-committee to plan our U3A NSW State Conference 2010:
Reg Grace (Conference Coordinator), Tony Bayes, Brenda Emerson, Shirley Gould, Carol Gregory, Marie Stewart and Hedi Roggeveen.
Note to Conference Coordinator: Do not allow Shirley Gould and Marie Stewart to sit together as these girls “talk too much” and are a bad influence on each other.
The next Committee Meeting will be at 1.30pm on Tuesday 8th January 2008 at the Penrith School of Arts.
