Afternoon Tea for Tutors & Volunteers – 2.30pm to 4pm on Saturday 12th April
Committee wishes to invite all tutors and volunteers for afternoon tea at the Penrith School of Arts between 2.30pm and 4pm on Saturday 12th April. There has been a good response to our invitation so far to attend our “Getting to know you” afternoon tea with approximately sixty people advising that they will be attending.

U3A NSW State Conferences
Reg Grace and Hedi Roggeveen attended the full two day conference. Hedi has made a detailed report of the conference that will be on our website shortly.
Twelve of our members attended the 1st day of the U3A NSW State Conference 2008 that was held at the Warilla Bowling Club. We hired a bus from Penrith City Council and one of our members – Max Sinclair - drove us down to Warilla (on the coast, south of Wollongong).
There were over 300 U3A members from all over NSW and several from interstate. The conference was very well organised with several inspirational speakers, workshops and tours of local areas of interest. The weather was glorious and one of our members – who will remain nameless – decided instead of listening to the inspirational speakers and attending workshops, he would go fishing, swimming and checking-out the beach babes. Well!!!. at least, he didn’t catch any fish …or any beach babes, either.

In the year 2009, the U3A NSW State Conference will be held at the Ex Services Club, Anson St, Orange on the 24th and 25th March, 2009. For more information, or if you would like to receive the official program in July, please contact:
Cecily Butcher, Secretary, Orange U3A Inc., P.O.Box 9017 NSW 2800

And in March 2010, we will be holding the U3A NSW State Conference in Penrith. We will be looking for ideas on how to entertain and inform our guests. We could have workshops and demonstrations on Tai Chi and Yoga, Bush Walking, tours of the Blue Mountains, Penrith Lakes, White Water and Regatta Centre, lectures on the Blue Mountains and anything else. Send us your ideas, please.

Debating by Hedi Roggeveen
The Debate that was scheduled for 12th April has been postponed.
Are you perhaps debating whether to join the Debating Team? Come and try us. We need more participants for this worthwhile activity.
Our first Debate took place on 21st March and, although we are all novices, we took up the challenge to help in research, and also to give morale support to the speakers. And you guessed it, due to the lack of numbers; we had to be the speakers. However, we survived. We are a very enthusiastic group and we are in the process of preparing the next Debate. But we surely need more participants if we want to continue. So grasp the challenge, come and join us and have lots of fun. If we can do it, so can you! Give it a try! Contact Mike Boyle – tel: 4751 4229 mwboyle@optusnet.com.au

Yoga
The start time of the Yoga class on Tuesdays was moved forward half an hour to 11am but is now, we believe, back to its original time slot of 11.30. It might be best if you check before attending.

Mah Jong
We have had responses to our request for Mah Jong sets. Janice Poulson has donated a Mah Jong set and we have been given the opportunity to purchase a brand new set very cheaply.

Applied Maths & Mechanics – at Springwood in Terms 3 and 4
Applied Maths & Mechanics for those who missed out on topics such as work, energy and power; linear, circular, projectile, simple harmonic and orbital motion; impulse and momentum: Newton’s Laws, acceleration and so forth, in work at and beyond Intermediate and School Certificate level. We plan to start from scratch with nothing too high-powered and no homework forced on you.
If you are interested, please contact Bob Perrie – tel: 4758 9414 after 9am and before 6pm but not between 2 and 3 pm please.

Rediplan is basically about “Readying Australian communities for emergencies” with the idea of reducing the impact of emergencies on communities around Australia.

Music with Paul
Jacqueline Barrett wrote the following two poems at an inspirational music morning with Paul King.
Thank-you, Jacqueline. We are also pleased to hear that Paul King provides a venue that conjures up the Poetry Muse.

Serenades these summer days
Are rising, sinking,
Loosely linking
Attentive listeners
In our music group.

Garden leaves in a gentle breeze
Are flicking, twisting,
Teasing with light
Our group distracted
By an interior concert.

How mercy drifts
Like dust mote shifts
Of kindness

How music binds
Our hearts and minds
To beauty.
  Be still
To listen.
Be still
To hear

Into your silence
Let the music
Clear
Swell to your stillness,
Cradle your silence,
And hold you
Still.
