Winter Solstice Get-together on Saturday 18th July
We had a “Winter Solstice Get-together” to replace the Christmas Party at the Penrith School of Arts, 3 Castlereagh Street, Penrith.
There was an enormous amount of food and mulled wine and we watched Tony Bayes’ excellent Conference Promotion DVD, a truly professional production.
An Introduction to the Visual Arts [Practice and Theory]
Now commencing on Thursday 6th August at 10.45am to 12.45pm
Lorraine White, a retired Art Teacher, will run a new Art course in Terms 3 and 4 at the Penrith School of Arts Hall.
This is a varied course, for keen novices or for those with aptitude but without formal training. Structured classes in drawing, painting and designing will provide varied experiences and a foundation of skills and information, which in turn will enable understanding the key to the creative process. There will be chalk and talk, gallery visits and some occasional [optional] research as we work towards appreciating and understanding the alternate perceptions of 20th century art.
For the first lesson participants need bring only notepad, plus 2xA2 cartridge sheets, 1x3b and 1x6b pencil. Later, a set of primary acrylics colours [red, blue, yellow, black, white], a packet of bristle/fitch brushes and a No. 6 acrylic [soft] hair brush. Buy only student quality unless you are already flying. Additional media will be advised as course progresses.
For more information, contact Lorraine: Tel: 4735 1888 or delorraine@bigpond.com

The Broadband for Seniors
Our U3A Committee will soon decide on the feasibility of converting Room 2 at the back of the Penrith School of Arts into a Computer Room with 2 Computer Kiosks with Broadband. 15 of our members have now volunteered to become Computer Tutors.
From our Webmaster – David Evans
On our website we've had 454 individual visitors this month and they've logged in 694 times between them. When you consider that only 103 of those came in through our home page (the others have either bookmarked a starting page or have come in through a search engine) it means we've had a helluva lot more visitors over the past eleven months than the 7099 indicated by the hit counter on the home page. The most popular pages this month have been the Class Timetable (179), Home Page (103), Drawing Class (50), History Forum (48), Walking (38) and Computer Hints (33).
The reaction to the History Forum is particularly interesting because I think most of those hits have come from non-U3A members (at least 15 have come via search engines and, I should think, most of the others from people who have bookmarked the page after locating it via those searches.)
Byzantium

Now see what happens when you don't check your grammar and syntax. The following announcements from church bulletins or at church services were sent in by Elizabeth Devlin. The Fasting & Prayer Conference includes meals. The sermon this morning: "Jesus Walks on the Water." The sermon tonight: "Searching for Jesus." Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands. Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community. Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say "Hell" to someone who doesn't care much about you. Don't let worry kill you off – let the Church help. Miss Charlene Mason sang "I will not pass this way again," giving obvious pleasure to the congregation. For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs. Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get. Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days. A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow. At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be "What Is Hell?" Come early and listen to our choir practice. Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones. Scouts are saving aluminium cans, bottles and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children. Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered. The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment and gracious hostility. Potluck supper Sunday at 5:00 PM - prayer and medication to follow. The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon. This evening at 7 pm there will be a hymn singing in the park across from the Church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin. Ladies Bible Study will be held Thursday morning at 10 am. All ladies are invited to lunch in the Fellowship Hall after the B.S. is done. Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 pm.Please use the back door. The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare's Hamlet in the Church basement Friday at 7pm. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy. |
