Some New Courses in 2010 Handbook

Creative Writing (at Blaxland):
Richard Lamb will take over from Dave Evans in tutoring this course. Dave is going to take a break so that he can do some serious writing.

Creative Writing (at Lawson):
This is a new course that will be tutored by George Conyngham at the Committee Room, Our lady of Nativity Church, Lawson.

The Adventure of English with Melvyn Bragg: (as presented on SBS television in 2007)
Tony Bayes will be the tutor for this course at Penrith and Springwood.
We will travel through Britain to tell the story of how an insignificant German dialect, which only arrived in the fifth century, evolved into a language, which is now spoken and understood by more people than any other around the world.
We trace English from its humble roots to its flowering in the writing of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. English is a global language. Every day, in cities all around the world it is estimated that well over a thousand million people around the world speak, or have a working knowledge of English.
This is its story. It’s a story that really reads like an adventure of extraordinary survival, invasion, near extinction, and fascinating flexibility.

English Language by Rob Loveday
Tony Bayes will also be the tutor for this course at Penrith and Springwood.
We will study the History of English; Humour – Laugh at English; English in Society – Language at Work; English around the World; and the Nature of Language – Linguistics, Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology, Word Coinage, Syntax and Grammar.
The presentations are full of exercises and activities for the class to focus their attention, increase participation and enhance social interaction, learning and enjoyment. There are many forays into history and languages other than English.

Recreational Mathematics and Solving Cryptic Crosswords (at Springwood):
Len Smith will tutor these two courses at Springwood Neighbourhood Centre.

The Science of Feelings and Emotions: Lloyd Fell will tutor this course at Springwood Neighbourhood Centre.
Feelings are a commentary we make about our biological emotions. In life experience, feelings are what matter most. Neuroscience is teeming with new discoveries about our emotions. We will explore these in a participatory course that is designed to be fun and requires no previous specialised knowledge.

Philosophy - The Life of Humans and the Way They Behave Towards Each Other
Brian Kearney will tutor this course at Penrith.
The following list of topics covers an area of Philosophy and includes some Law and Criminology along with the basics of Philosophy:

This course will provide basic information on growing and caring for orchids, with practical, hands-on activities. Visits to an orchid grower's collection and an orchid show. Students need to provide their own gloves, secateurs and the ability to have transport to visit other growers.

Lapidary - Introduction to Lapidary Gemstones for Jewellery Making
Michael Wilde will tutor this course at Blaxland Gem and Mineral Club, Valley Heights.
This course provides an introduction to the composition and location of the wonderful variety of native rocks, otherwise known as gems and minerals. Participants will cut, shape and polish a slab of rock resulting in a gemstone suitable for jewellery making. They will have access to the well equipped workshop and will observe members undertaking other aspects of jewellery making including silver craft and faceting. An optional field trip may be offered for those who wish to experience fossicking.

  Committee News

Broadband for Seniors
The Committee took the decision not to proceed with the Broadband for Seniors Project because our U3A is very busy organising the U3A 2010 State Conference in March next year and it would cost our U3A between $500 and $1,000 to install the necessary equipment and cabling.
