Thanks to the enterprise of long-time U3A member and drama tutor, Joan Vaughn Taylor, older residents will in future be able to swim free-of-charge at Blue Mountains pools. The following article appeared in the Blue Mountain Gazette, dated July 9, 2009.

Joan pointed out to Mayor Adam Searle that granting older (she said "over 85") residents free use of the pools could actually save the council money. Her argument was that the number of people involved would be quite low, and their increased fitness would make it less necessary for council to provide care services for them.
It must have been a convincing argument because not only did Councillor Searle agree with her, he persuaded the council to reduce the age limit for free admission to 75.
