International relations took a great leap forward on Wednesday 30th June, when the first U3A Multi-national Food Fest was held at the Penrith School of Arts building.

Organised by Jim Tiberi and the Italian class, it included groups from the French, German, Spanish and Latin classes.

Each group provided a classic dish from the country whose language they were learning.

This meant that we got to sample such delicacies as beautiful pea and ham soup from Germany, paella from Spain, boeuf bourguignon and crepes florentines from France and lasagne from, of course, Italy. The Latin class made a Roman Stew to an ancient Roman recipe.( We were relieved to find it was made from beef and not as they often were, from dormouse.)

Every dish was delicious and there were very few leftovers, unfortunately. Thank you to all who cooked.

Around 60 members turned up and the atmosphere was relaxed and very convivial, aided by a small amount of vino.

Congratulations and thanks must go to the team, who organised, arranged and then cleaned up after the festivities, headed by the tireless Chris Price, whose expertise was invaluable.

When all was finished, Jim said a few words, adding that he thought it might become an annual event. Sounds good to me.
